Virginia Rowers Place Fourth In The Youth Eight Competition At The Head Of The Charles Regatta

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team placed fourth in the youth eight event at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday (Oct. 24). Virginia additionally claimed a fifth place finish in the championship eight competition and a sixth place finish in the championship four race. The regatta was held on the Charles River, in Boston, Mass.

The Community Rowing, Inc. Youth Program won the youth eight competition with a time of 13:07.580. EWRC placed second in the contest (13:12.372), followed by Friends of Greenlake Crew (13:19.769). Virginia finished fourth in the youth eight with a time of 13:25.779. Fifty-one crews competed in the event.

The youth eight boat was manned by Michelle Ellison, Melinda Fiesler, Diane Leigh, Allison Brennan, Andria Haneman, Megan Haughs, Lindsay Arnold, Maria Micocci and Elizabeth Welsh.

The championship four event was won by London Training Center with a time of 13:32.448. Vesper Boat Club finished second (13:37.528), the University of Victoria placed third (13:50.316), and the University of British Columbia claimed fourth (13:58.291), followed by the University of California, Los Angeles in fifth (14:06.142). Virginia placed sixth in the competition with a time of 14:13.548. Twenty crews participated in the competition.

Members of the championship four boat included Launa Forehand, Kerry Maher, Renee Albers, Mary Dobmeier and Katie Yrazabal.

ASR Nereus was victorious in the championship eight race, winning the event in 12:06.663. Princeton obtained a second place finish (12:08.312) and Yale finished third (12:14.516). USRowing followed in fourth (12:17.609), and Virginia garnered a fifth place finish with a time of 12:17.741. Forty-one boats raced in the event.

The UVA championship eight boat was comprised of Katie Hilton, Beth Clark, Melanie Kok, Carolyn McMillan, Libby McCann, Yvonne Epp, Sara Lippa, Margaret Matia and Crystal MacLeod.

The next competition for the UVA women’s rowing program will be on Saturday, November 6, when the novice team scrimmages the Georgetown novices at the Rivanna Reservoir in Charlottesville. Races are scheduled to begin at 10:15 and will conclude by noon.
