CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia men’s soccer player Hunter Freeman (Allen, Texas/Bradenton Academy) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Player of the Week. Freeman, a third-year defender/midfielder, had a hand in all four goals for the Cavaliers last week in Virginia’s wins over Longwood (1-0 on October 20th) and Duke (3-2 in overtime on October 23rd). Freeman scored one goal against Duke and had three assists (two against Duke, one against Longwood), including the game-winning assist in both of the victories. Freeman’s three assists last week brings his NCAA-leading total up to 16 assists for the year.
Last week, Freeman was also named to Soccer America’s Team of the Week for Week 7 (October 11-17).
For the season, Freeman has started all 15 games he has appeared in and has recorded a team-high 20 points resulting from his NCAA-leading 16 assists and two goals. His 16 assists this season is already tied for fourth all-time at UVa for the most assists in a single season in school-history. Freeman’s first goal this year was the first collegiate goal of his career and was also the game-winning goal for Virginia in a 4-1 victory over Manhattan on September 21st. His second goal this season came against Duke (October 23rd) when he tied the game at 2-2 with just 1:04 remaining in regulation after converting a penalty kick in a contest UVa eventual won in overtime.
Freeman entered this season with four points resulting from four assists after two years of action. Fifteen games into the 2004 season, Freeman has scored five times as many points (20) than he did in his first two seasons combined (4).
