CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Game 1 of the University of Virginia baseball team’s second annual Orange vs. Blue World Series went to the Orange Team as it came away with a 6-0 shutout victory over the Blue Team at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Field. The Orange Team built an early 2-0 lead after one inning of play en route to taking a commanding 6-0 lead after four innings to post a series-opening win over the Blue Team.
Virginia All-American candidate Ryan Zimmerman finished 2-for-4 at the plate and reached base four times while scoring two-runs and driving in a pair of runs for the Orange Team, coached by UVa assistant coach Joe Hastings. First-year Sean Doolittle posted a game-high three hits after going 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. The trio of returner Tom Hagan (1-for-3) and newcomers Patrick Wingfield (1-for-4) and Nick Cruit (1-for-4) each recorded a RBI, while returners Matt Street (1-for-4), Kyle Werman (1-for-3) and Tim Henry (1-for-4) each posted hits for the Orange Team. Street, Hagan, Cruit and Henry also scored a run in the contest.
Orange Team starting pitcher LHP Alex Smith picked up the win after going 5.0 innings and allowed no runs on just one hit to go along with a game-high four strikeouts in the victory. Veteran Adam Laird pitched 1.0 scoreless inning and recorded one strikeout, while Josh Myers pitched 1.0 scoreless inning and struck out two batters to close out the game.
The Blue Team, coached by UVa assistant coach Karl Kuhn, mustered just one hit with Brandon Guyer going 1-for-3 at the plate. Blue Team starting pitcher Mike Ballard tossed 4.0 innings and allowed six runs (three earned) on nine hits and struck out a team-high three batters. Allie Swanson went 3.0 scoreless innings and gave up just two hits while striking out one batter.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, October 27th to play Game 2 of the series. The contest is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM and will be played at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
