#2 Virginia Men’s Soccer Rolls To Victory Over #24 Old Dominion, 4-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #2 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded a convincing 4-1 victory over the #24 ranked Old Dominion Monarchs in a non-conference match played at UVa’s Klockner Stadium. Virginia scored three first half goals to take a three-goal lead and never looked back as the Cavaliers won their ninth consecutive games and remained perfect at home by improving their record to 11-0-0 at Klockner Stadium. UVa’s Hunter Freeman, the NCAA-assist leader, dished out three more assists to increase his total to 19 on the season which is just one assist short of tying the school-record (20) for most assists in a single season at Virginia. UVa’s Matt Oliver scored a pair of goals and Adam Cristman and Jeremy Barlow each posted a goal in the win for the Cavaliers.

Virginia scored the first goal of the match at 9:37 when Freeman sent a pass to Ian Holder, who sent a cross into the box the was headed into goal by Cristman to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Cristman’s goal was his team-high seventh of the season. UVa extended its lead to 2-0 at 34:19 when Freeman sent a corner kick into the box to teammate Jeff Tuman, who directed the ball towards the post where Barlow finished the play of with a chip shot for the goal. Barlow’s goal, his fourth of the year, was the eventual game-winner.

Virginia pushed its lead to 3-0 at 39:58 when Freeman sent a free kick into the box that Oliver one-timed for the first of his two goals in the match. UVa carried its three-goal lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

Virginia maintained its 3-0 lead until just over 10 minutes remaining in the match when Old Dominion was awarded a penalty kick attempt. ODU’s Ross Mackenzie made good on the attempt at 79:41 to pull his team within two by making the score 3-1. However, UVa was awarded a penalty kick of its own at 86:23 and Oliver converted the attempt to give the Cavaliers a three-goal cushion again by making the score 4-1 with just over three and a half minutes remaining to play in regulation. Oliver’s second goal of the match was his sixth of the season which is second on the team.

UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke pulled in game-high four saves in the victory, while ODU goalkeeper John Connelly made two saves in goal. The Monarchs had one team save when a defender stepped in and blocked a potential UVa goal.

With the victory, Virginia improves its record to 14-2-0 overall, while the loss drops Old Dominion’s record to 10-4-2 on the season. UVa is now 15-4-2 all-time against ODU in men’s soccer.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, October 30th when UVa face the Virginia Tech Hokies in an Atlantic Coast Conference match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM. The Cavaliers’ road match against the Hokies is UVa’s final regular season road game of the year.
