CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 4 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team concluded the regular season with a 3-0 win over NC State Wednesday night at Klockner Stadium. The clinches second place in the ACC, as they finish the regular season with a 14-2-1 overall record, 6-2-1 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers opened the scoring in the 11th minute, when Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.) scored her team-leading 12 goal of the season. Gillian Hatch (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) threaded a ball onto the run of Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.). Keselica then beat the charging Wolfpack keeper for the ball and crossed it in front to Gusick, who tapped it into the empty net. The Cavaliers would hold that 1-0 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, Virginia added to their lead in the 72nd minute as Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) blasted a shot from 18-yards after a give and go with Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas). Huffman notched her second assist of the night on the Cavaliers’ final score of the night in the 81st minute when Ariel Thompson (Salem, Va.) one-timed her cross from inside the six.
Overall, the Cavaliers outshot NC State 18-2, the seventh time this season the Cavaliers have scored more goals than shots allowed. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) needed to make just one save to post her school-record 12th shutout of the season. Megan Connors made eight saves for NC State.
“The was an excellent result to conclude the regular season,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “With a week off before the ACC Tournament, we needed to continue our momentum. Hopefully this off weekend coming up will help us be refreshed for the start of the postseason next week.”
The Cavaliers will be the No. 2 seed at next week’s ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C. Virginia will play in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, with opponent and game time to be announced. NC State will play a first round ACC Tournament game at Maryland on Sunday.
