The Virginia women’s golf team is tied for the lead at the ACC/SEC Challenge. The Cavaliers shot a first-round score of 292 (+8) to tie with second-ranked Auburn. Top-ranked Duke and Florida are tied for third at 294 (+10). The field includes a total of 16 teams from the ACC and SEC.
Auburn’s Diana Ramage and Wake Forest’s Laura Crawford are tied for the individual lead at 70 (-1). Florida’s Tiffany Chudy and Mississippi State’s Beth Irwin are tied for third at 71 (E).
The Cavaliers thrived off balanced scoring in the first round. Sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) is tied for 5th at 72 (+1). Sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Va.) are tied for 10th at 73 (+2). Sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) is another stroke back, tied for 18th, after a 74 (+3). Sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.) came in with a 75 (+4) to tie for 33rd.
The second round is set to begin Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at The Raven Course at Sandestin Beach & Golf Resort.
