#2 Virginia Men’s Soccer Falls To Virginia Tech In ACC Match, 2-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The #2 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies in an Atlantic Coast Conference match at Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium. The Hokies broke a 1-1 tie in the 54th minute to end the Cavaliers’ nine-game winning streak. The loss also snapped Virginia’s 27 consecutive game winning streak against Virginia Tech in men’s soccer. UVa, now 31-3-0 all-time against VT, last lost to the Hokies on October 4, 1966.

Virginia Tech took an early 1-0 lead just 2:16 into the match on a goal by Greg Roach. Virginia answered back and tied the game at 1-1 at 24:49 when Joe Vide scored his first goal of the season. Vide’s goal was set up by teammates Hunter Freeman and Will Hall who each had an assist on the play. Freeman’s assist, his NCAA-leading 20th of the year, tied the UVa school-record for most assists in a single season at Virginia. Former Cavalier Mike Fisher set the single-season school-record with 20 assists back in 1996.

In the second period, the Hokies broke the 1-1 tie at 53:35 when Ben Nason scored the game-winning goal, liftingVirginia to one-goal victory over Virginia.

UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke made three saves in the loss, while VT goalkeeper Chase Harrison pulled in three saves in the win.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 14-3-0 overall, 4-2-0 in the ACC. The victory improves Virginia Tech’s record to 9-8-0 overall, 2-4-0 in the conference. Virginia is now 31-3-0 all-time against Virginia Tech in men’s soccer.

The Cavaliers will return to home action on Friday, November 5th when UVa face the Maryland Terrapins in an ACC match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM. The match is Virginia’s final regular season game of the year.
