The Cavaliers, under the guidance of head coach Debbie Ryan, stand 11-3 and 1-0 in ACC player after a thrilling 85-83 overtime win at Wake Forest on Jan. 6. Senior Brandi Teamer leads the Cavaliers with 15.3 points per game while shooting 53 percent from the field. Senior LaTonya Blue follows with 10.9 ppg. Sophomore Brenna McGuire adds 8.7 ppg. UVa out-scores its opponents by +13.3 points and out-rebounds foes by +6.9 boards.
The Yellow Jackets, under the guidance of second-year head coach MaChelle Joseph, stand 10-2 overall and 1-0 in ACC play after a 59-58 win at Florida State on Jan. 6. Chioma Nnamaka leads the team with 14.0 ppg, while sophomore Stephanie Higgs adds 13.9 ppg. Georgia Tech stands a perfect 9-0 at home in Alexander Memorial Coliseum this season. Virginia stands 47-8 against Georgia Tech since series action began in 1979. Last season, the teams split the two-game series with each team claiming a home win.
The No. Blue Devils, under the guidance of 13th-year head coach Gail Goestenkors, stand 14-1 overall after a 101-42 win over Holy Cross on Jan. 4. Junior Monique Currie is the team leader with 17.2 ppg. Freshman Wanisha Smith and junior Mistie Williams follow with 11.9 ppg each. Duke opens ACC play with No. 25 Virginia Tech on Jan. 9 prior to visiting Charlottesville. Virginia stands 32-21 in series action with Duke. However, the Blue Devils have won the last nine outings. UVa’s last win over the Blue Devils was a 61-49 victory at University Hall on Jan. 30, 2000.
Each of the last two seasons, Virginia has faced Duke when it held the No. 1 ranking in the country. With this week’s loss of No. 1 LSU to Rutgers, the Blue Devils could be the nation’s new No. 1 team by the time they reach University Hall for next Friday’s showdown. On Jan. 9, 2003, UVa led the top-ranked Blue Devils throughout the game but lost at the buzzer on a questionable call, 60-59. Last season, Duke claimed a 63-52 win on Jan. 18, 2004. Both of those games were played at University Hall.
