NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 55 ranked Virginia women’s tennis team opened the 2005 dual match season on a positive note, downing Michigan State 5-2 Saturday at the Currey Tennis Center on the campus of Vanderbilt University.
The Cavaliers fell behind early, losing the doubles point to the Spartans. The No. 23 ranked team of Diana Srebrovic (Oakville, Ont.) and Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) cruised to an 8-1 win over Sarah Andrews and Shelley Brady at the No. 1 position. However, Michigan State was able to pull out close wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to capture the doubles point.
In singles, the Cavaliers rallied to win the first four matches to conclude to clinch the dual match victory. Wink lost just one game in posting a win at No. 3 singles. At No. 1 singles, Srebrovic downed Keri Thompson 6-2, 6-1. Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) sealed the Cavalier win with victories at No. 2 and No. 5 respectively. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) concluded the match with a win at No. 6 singles.
Virginia (1-0) will conclude their season opening trip to Nashville on Sunday as they take on No. 6 Vanderbilt (1-0) on Sunday at the Currey Tennis Center.
