Greensboro, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference released its 2005 football schedule today. Virginia’s schedule features 11 regular season games, including six home contests. Starting times for all games will be announced later.
The schedule features seven games against teams that played in bowl games this past season, including four against teams ranked in the final Associated Press poll.
The Cavaliers finished with an 8-4 record last season and appeared in a bowl for the third year in a row. They were ranked 23rd in the final AP poll, the second time in the last three seasons they have been ranked at season’s end.
Virginia opens the 2005 campaign at home against Western Michigan on Sept. 3. The Cavaliers defeated the Broncos 59-16 two seasons ago in Kalamazoo.
Following a bye week, the Cavaliers travel north to face Syracuse on Sept. 17 at the Carrier Dome. Virginia lost 6-3 in 1977 in the only other game at Syracuse.
Al Groh’s Cavaliers open their ACC slate at home against Duke on Sept. 24. Virginia has won 17 of its last 18 ACC home openers.
Virginia opens October with two conference road games. The Cavaliers play at Maryland, where they have not won since 1999, on Oct. 1. The following week they make their first trip to Boston College in 42 years. The Eagles will be playing their first season in the ACC after many years in the Big East.
UVa returns home to face Florida State on Oct. 15 and travels to North Carolina for a match-up on Oct. 22.
The season’s final month starts with three consecutive home games, beginning with the season’s final non-conference game against Temple on Nov. 5. This will be the Owls’ first visit to Scott Stadium.
Georgia Tech comes to Charlottesville on Nov. 12 and the Cavaliers conclude their home schedule against in-state rival Virginia Tech on Nov. 19. Virginia closes the regular season at Miami on Nov. 26 in the Cavaliers’ first game at the Orange Bowl.
