CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 10th-ranked Virginia men’s swimming team put on a dominating display in registering a 172-71 victory over 19th-ranked North Carolina Saturday (January 22) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Cavaliers won 12 of 13 events and had nine events where they had at least one-two finishes. UVa improves to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Tar Heels fall to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the ACC.
Fourth-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) and third-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) both won a pair of individual events and Anderson was also on a winning relay.
The Cavaliers opened the meet by winning the 400 medley relay with a NCAA “B” time of 3:17.51. First-year Bryan Stahl (Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), second-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/Split), fourth-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson), and first-year Matt Targett (Victoria, Australia/Scotch College) combined to win the relay.
Virginia went one-two in the 1000 freestyle with Crippen winning in a time of 9:04.99, while second-year John Millen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) was second in 9:15.51. Millen came right back to place second in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.44. Second-year Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J./Princeton Day) grabbed the top spot in the 200 free, touching in 1:39.79. UVa swept the top four places in the 50 free to win its fourth event of the meet. Anderson registered the top time in the ACC this season in winning in 20.02 (NCAA B). Targett was second in 20.94 and fourth-year Brett Simon (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) was third (21.38), followed by second-year Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie) in fourth (21.48). In the 400 individual medley, the Cavaliers took the top three spots with first-year Kevin Nead (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) leading the way with a time of 3:52.39 (NCAA B). Fourth-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) was second (3:54.94) and first-year Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) was third (3:57.25).
Third-year Andrew Barber (Vienna, Va./Marshall) won the sixth event in a row for the Cavaliers as he totaled 307.65 points in winning the one-meter diving competition. In the 200 butterfly, Raab continued UVa’s dominance by winning in a time of 1:46.19. Anderson won his second individual event of the meet by capturing the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.29 (NCAA B), while Targett was runner-up in 45.75. In the ninth event of the meet, the 200 backstroke, Virginia went one-two with Greenwood posting a winning time of 1:49.24. Nead was second in the 200 back with a time of 1:50.63. Virginia swept the top four spots in the 500 freestyle. Crippen won his second event of the meet as he touched first in the 500 with a NCAA “B” time of 4:26.37. Millen was second (4:33.07), first-year Charlie Cunnick (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport Central) took third (4:34.44) and Hirniak was fourth (4:34.79). North Carolina’s Ben Herboth won the three-meter diving competition with 329.63 points for the Tar Heel’s lone win of the meet.
In the 200 breaststroke, Virginia registered another one-two finish with Rogulj leading the way with a time of 2:00.32 (NCAA B). First-year Ryan Hurley (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) was second in a time of 2:03.13. The Cavaliers wrapped up the meet by taking the top two spots in the 400 freestyle relay. UVa’s team of fourth-year Brian Harrington (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon), Hirniak, Raab, and Anderson clocked a time of 3:02.61. The foursome of Imboden, Stahl, first-year Brett Murphy (Oakmont, Pa./Shady Side Academy), and second-year Andrew Hansen (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit) was second in 3:06.39.
The Cavalier men return to action on Friday (January 28) when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to swim against second-ranked Florida at 6:00 p.m.
