GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had their perfect dual meet records snapped as the third-ranked the University of Florida Gators posted victories over the Cavaliers Friday evening (January 29) at Stephen C. O’Connell Center Natatorium. The 10th-ranked Cavalier men fell 128-113, while the 12th-ranked UVa women dropped a 131-90 decision to the Gators. The UVa men fall to 8-1 on the season, while the Virginia now stand at 9-1.
The Cavalier men won six of 13 events in their 128-113 loss to Florida (9-1). Fourth-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) won a pair of events in leading UVa. Anderson clocked a pair of NCAA B times in winning the 100 and 200 freestyle. He won the 100 free in 44.44 and lowered his ACC season-best time in the 200 free by touching in 1:38.02.
First-year Matt Targett (Victoria, Australia/Scotch College) took the top spot in the 50 free as he touched in a time of 20.43. Fourth-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) led a one-two UVa finish in the 200 individual medley. He posted an ACC season-best time of 1:49.67, while first-year Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) was right behind Greenwood in a time of 1:49.87. Both times bettered the NCAA B qualifying standard. Fourth-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) remained perfect in the 200 butterfly as he won with a NCAA “B” time of 1:46.53. First-year Ryan Hurley (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) led a second one-two Cavalier finish in the 200 breaststroke. Hurley posted a NCAA “B” time of 2:01.81 in winning the 200 breast, while second-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/Split) was second (2:02.04).
Third-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) was second in the 500 and 1000 freestyles, finishing less than a second behind Olympian Ryan Lochte in both events. Crippen shaved over three seconds off his previous season best time in the 1000 with a time of 9:00.41. In the 500 free, Crippen clocked a time of 4:23.76 to take nearly two seconds of his best time of the 2004-05 season. Third-year Andrew Barber (Vienna, Va./Marshall) posted a NCAA Zone B Diving Regionals qualifying score in the one-meter diving competition. He tallied a season-best 311.02 points in finishing third.
The Virginia women suffered their first dual meet loss of the season with a 131-90 setback to the third-ranked Gators (7-2). The Cavaliers registered six NCAA “B” times in the meet. Florida won the first 10 events before exhibitioning the three-meter diving, the 200 breaststroke and the 400 free relay.
Third-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) posted a pair of NCAA “B” times. She was second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.39 and placed fifth in the 200 individual medley with a season-best time of 2:04.24. First-year Anna Steenrod (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) was runner-up in the 200 I.M., finishing with a NCAA “B” time of 2:02.88, which is two seconds faster than her previous collegiate best time.
Second-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) clocked a NCAA “B” and season-best time of 2:15.35 in the 200 breaststroke. Her time was second fastest in the event, but she earned first place points due to Florida exhibitioning the event. Third-year Elaine Bennett (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) was second in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:02.97.
Second-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) and first-year Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) also posted NCAA “B” times in the meet. Bland was third in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.49, while Lewis was third in the 100 free in a time of 50.91. Third-year Patty Park (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) was second in the one-meter diving competition with 204.82 points and picked up first place points in the three-meter competition with a score of 196.65.
Virginia returns to action on February 5 when it hosts Maryland at 1:00 p.m. at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.
