#6 Virginia Eliminates #11 Old Dominion, 79-57

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.- – The No. 6 seed Virginia women’s basketball team captured a 79-57 win over intra-state rival Old Dominion on Saturday night in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament first round at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
The Cavaliers, who improved to 21-10 on the season, will face host and No. 3 Minnesota (25-7) in second round action on Monday, March 21 at 8:30 p.m. Central time (9:30 p.m. Eastern) on espn2. The 12th-ranked Golden Gophers beat No. 14 seed St. Francis in second game.
“Old Dominion came out and was very aggressive,” UVa head coach Debbie Ryan. “We were on our heels and out of sync. We regrouped. ODU is a tough team. They’re to be congratulated.”
“A very good basketball team, this Virginia team,” ODU head coach Wendy Larry said. “They play with a great deal of passion, very solid and very physical.”
In the first half, the Lady Monarchs opened with a 6-0 run before UVa got on the board. ODU led by 11 points, 18-7 with 12:08 on the clock. The Cavaliers went on a 13-2 run to tie the game at 20-20 on a jumper by freshman Denesha Kenion (Oxon, Md.). UVa took over on a jumper by senior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) and never relinquished the lead. The Hoos led at intermission, 39-33.
In the second half, UVa went ahead by 11 points, 51-40 with 14;12 to play. The Cavs held a double digit lead from the remainder of the game.
Teamer paced Virginia with a game-high 23 points and game-high 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season (23th of her career). She also went a perfect 9-for-9 from the line, extending her made free throw streak to 19 straight makes. Junior Tiffany Sardin (Chicago, Ill.) added 16 points, while freshman Sharnee Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) chipped in 10 points.
“Right now, we don’t have some of the strength in the perimeter that Virginia has,” Larry continued. “We have to get people that present themselves in the paint …. like Brandi Teamer. She’s a force to be reckoned with.”
“I just want to do whatever it takes to help my team,” Sardin said. “I want to win at this point.”
Shareese Grant paced ODU with 16 points. Tiffany Green added 10 points.
Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Old Dominion, 44-36.
