The Virginia Cavaliers (13-4) stormed back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game against #3 Duke going into halftime, but the Blue Devils (14-3) outscored the Hoos 5-2 in the second half to win their first ACC tournament championship. Nikki Lieb had three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Kate Breslin had four goals and Tyler Leachman had two assists to lead #7 Virginia offensively.

Duke jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Rachel Sanford scored to open the game, and then Katie Chrest scored a pair of goals 1:15 apart to take a 3-0 lead. After a Duke gained possession in the goal circle, the clear was broken as Cary Chasney stripped the ball and collected the ground ball at the restraining line, giving possession to the Cavaliers. Virginia settled their offense and Breslin drove to the cage for Virginia’s first goal of the game at 16:16. A second Sanford goal gave the Blue Devils a 4-1 lead at 20:46.

The Virginia defense stormed back, starting again with a solid job of tackling back by Chasney at the restraining line. The Hoos gained possession at the top of their offensive zone, and Breslin again drove to the cage and scored, cutting the deficit to 4-2 at 22:57. A Miles save and the resulting ground ball by Elizabeth Pinney led to the next possession, and at the other end of the field Leachman drew a double at the top of the fan and dumped the ball into Meredith Lazarus, who scored at 24:20 to pull Virginia within one. An errant Cavalier throw in the offensive third was saved by Leachman at the restraining line, and Virginia settled their offense. Kim Connors was detained while making a cut, and she buried the 8-meter shot to tie the game at 27:45. The teams went into the break tied at 4-4.

Duke jumped on top early with the first two goals in the second half, but Virginia pulled within one as Leachman caused a turnover right after a Duke draw control, and Virginia worked the ball upfield where Breslin drove from the top of the fan to score at 39:24. A Kristen Waagbo goal just over a minute pushed the margin back to two.

Lieb and Connors doubled the ball at the top of the fan and caused a turnover as Lieb scooped up the ball and started a transition that saw the ball go to Courtney Young on the other side of the field, and then to Leachman in the middle as she was streaking down the middle. Leachman dumped the ball over to Kate Breslin, who was on the crease, and Breslin scored her fourth goal of the game at 42:16 to pull Virginia to within one at 7-6. Two Waagbo goals down the stretch sealed the game for the Blue Devils.

Virginia returns to action on Tuesday as the Hoos return to Baltimore to face the Loyola Greyhounds in a game starting at 4:00.
