GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia golfer Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) has been selected to the 2005 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Golf Team by the conference coaches, ACC officials announced on Monday.
Additionally, head coach Jan Mann earned ACC Coach of the Year honors.
Wigger is Virginia’s top golfer with a 74.93 average after 27 rounds. Starting all nine tournaments, Wigger has been UVa’s top finisher in eight tourneys. In her short two-year collegiate career, the sophomore has six Top 10 finishers. She paced UVa with a 12th-place showing at the ACC Championship, helping the Cavaliers to third place in just their second season (the team finished 7th of 7 in 2004). Wigger has finished third three times this season. She shot an even 216, including a career-best 69 in the second round, at the Mason Rudolph Championship. The ACC honor is the second honor of her young career. Wigger also earned All-ACC honors, NGCA All-American Scholar accolades, Academic All-ACC honors, and Virginia’s Golfer of the Year honors in 2004 as a true freshman.
Hired in 2002 to launch women’s golf as UVa’s 25th intercollegiate sport, Mann guided the Cavaliers to a third-place finish at the 2005 ACC Championship in just its second season. Under her guidance, UVa has posted six Top 10 finishes this season and makes its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championship later this week. The Cavaliers travel to Gainesville, Fla., for the 2005 NCAA East Regional. Play tees off on Thursday, May 5.
