GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Playing in her first-ever NCAA Championship, Virginia sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) leads the field of 108 golfers after the first day of competition at the NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional on Friday.

Eighth seed Virginia stands eighth of the 21 teams. Fourth seed Ohio State (565, +5) holds a 10-stroke lead over No.1 seed Duke (575, +15). No. 7 seed Furman is third with a 582 (+22). The Cavaliers finished the day with a 589 (+29) after tying the school record with a 292 in the first round.

Wigger leads the field with a three-under 137. She fired a career-low and school record three-under 67 in the second round. Furman’s Jenny Suh follows by one stroke with a two-under 138. Tulane’s Liliana Alvarez is third with a 141 (+1).

“I hit the ball well,” Wigger said. “I made a lot of putts that I really needed to make to save par. I am going to have the same game plan as today. I need to take it one shot at a time and one hole at a time and remember to have fun.”

Sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.) is tied for 24th with a 148 (+8), while freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Va.) is tied for 38th with a 151 (+11). Sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) shot a 158 (+18), and sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) followed by one stroke with a 159 (+19).

The final round of the NCAA East Regional tees off at 7:40 a.m. on Saturday, May 7 at the par-70 University of Florida Golf Course. UVa’s first tee time is set for 8:30 a.m.
