OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team won the overall championship and the South Region championship on Sunday (May 15) at the South/Central Regional Championships on Melton Hill Lake. It marks the second consecutive year Virginia has won the overall championship and the South Region Championship.
The Cavaliers won championships in both the second varsity eight and the varsity four competitions. Virginia’s second varsity eight and varsity four boats are undefeated this spring. UVa crews also finished second in the novice eight, third in the varsity eight and the second novice eight, and fourth in the open four.
Virginia won the overall championship and the South Region championship with 372 points. Rounding out the top ten in the overall team standings were Ohio State (366), Wisconsin (324), Michigan (317), Tennessee (304), Michigan State (294), Notre Dame (262), Minnesota (231), Indiana (187) and Clemson (180). Tennessee finished second in the South Region standings and Clemson was third. Ohio State won the Central Region championship.
“I am proud of all the crews and how they competed,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “I am also pleased with the way they handled final exam week last week and then did a great job of competing this weekend. We had a good effort across the board. The second varsity eight and varsity four crews won their competitions, and I am happy with the way our novice crews finished the year.”
UVa won the grand final of the second varsity eight with a time of 6:33.30 followed by Ohio State (6:34.12), Michigan State (6:38.96), Michigan (6:39.17), Wisconsin (6:44.86) and Notre Dame (6:52.75). Virginia’s second varsity eight boat was comprised of Katie Hilton (coxswain), Beth Clark, Crystal MacLeod, Libby McCann, Kim Southern, Heather Gardner, Sara Lippa, Mary Dobmeier and Chrissie Monaghan.
The Cavaliers finished first in the grand final of the varsity four with a time of 7:24.40. Michigan State finished second in 7:31.94 followed by Wisconsin (7:35.84), Michigan (7:38.93), Notre Dame (7:40.80) and Minnesota (7:42.80). UVa’s varsity fourcrew was made up of Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Mindy Fiesler, Annemarie Pitts, Allison Brennan and Katrin Sydlik.
Virginia’s novice eight boat finished second with a time of 7:08.12. Michigan won the novice eight grand final with a time of 7:04.00. Ohio State was third with a time of 7:09.38 followed by Clemson (7:11.60), Iowa (7:12.47), Wisconsin (7:12.77) andNotre Dame (7:14.56). The Cavaliers’ novice eight boat was comprised of Mary Eddy (coxswain), Diane Leigh, Maria Micocci, Lindsay Arnold, Kelsie Chaudoin, Lindsey Fletcher, Adrienne Egge, Laura Laycock and Schafer Bomstein.
UVa finished third in the varsity eight with a time of 6:29.91. Ohio State won the varsity eight with a time of 6:27.50 and Tennessee finished just ahead of Virginia with a time of 6:29.61. Wisconsin was fourth (6:34.91) followed by Michigan (6:36.16) and Michigan State (6:42.41). Virginia’s varsity eight crew was made up of Launa Forehand (coxswain), Catelyn Coyle, Ashley Jones, Margaret Matia, Andria Haneman, Carolyn McMillan, Kerry Maher, Katie Yrazabal and Melanie Kok.
Ohio State won the second novice eight competition with a time of 7:21.60 followed by Clemson (7:24.70), Virginia (7:28.80), Cincinnati (7:35.00) and Tennessee (7:45.90). The Cavaliers second novice eight boat was comprised of Lia Bradley (coxswain), Megan Haughs, Liz Welsh, Sarah Tweedt, Kirsten Graslie, Katie Haney, Sara Peeling, Rachel Beck and Jessica Merlo.
Virginia finished fourth in the open four competition with a time of 7:48.23. Ohio State won the open four grand final with a time of 7:38.90 followed by Wisconsin (7:40.54) and Michigan (7:42.79). Notre Dame finished fifth in 7:49.01, while Texas was sixth (7:51.12) and Iowa seventh (7:54.33). UVa’s open four crew was made up of Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Abby Lynch, Anna Samaha, Jennifer Furstenau and Victoria Moore.
Invitations to the 2005 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships will be extended this week and the Virginia women’s rowing team is in good position to receive an invitation. The NCAA Championships are scheduled for May 27-29 in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
