SUNRIVER, Ore. – Virginia stands 16th after the third round of action at the 2005 NCAA Women’s Golf National Championship at the Sunriver Resort on Thursday.
Top-ranked Duke, which stood fifth after the second round, fired a six-under 278 to take over as leader with an 873 (+21). Auburn follows with an 881 (+29), while defending national champion UCLA is third with an 882 (+30).
The Cavaliers, making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA national championship, shot a 295, three strokes off the school record low round, for a 907 (+55) total.
“The team played well,” UVa head coach Jan Mann said. “We had the low round of the morning group. It was windy still, but the weather was better in the afternoon.”
Individually, Duke’s Anna Grzebien fired a five-under 65 for an even 213 score to hold a four-stroke lead over teammate Brittany Lang and UCLA’s Charlotte Mayorkas, who share second with a 217 (+4) each. Five players, including UVa sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.), are tied for fourth with a 218 (+5) apiece. Wigger fired a 73 (+2) on the day.
“Leah had a couple of bad breaks,” Mann added, “but overall, she played very solid golf. When she had to, she scrambled and made par. She’s still in the thick of it. I expect her to go out tomorrow and have another great round.”
Freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Fla.) also shot a 73 for a 223 (+10) to tie for 30th, while sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) carded a 232 (+19). Sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.) fired a 236 (+23), and sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) rounded out the UVa scoring with a 241 (+28).
The final round of the NCAA Women’s Golf National Championship tees off at 9 a.m. PDT a.m. on Friday, May 20 at the par-71 Sunriver Resort.
