INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Five members of the University of Virginia women’s rowing team have earned All-South Region honors from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) and UVa women’s head rowing coach Kevin Sauer is the South Region Coach of the Year.
Seniors Launa Forehand (coxswain), Margaret Matia and Carolyn McMillan are first-team All-South selections, while seniors Catelyn Coyle and Katie Yrazabal are second-team selections. Matia was a second-team All-South selection last season.
All five were members of Virginia’s varsity eight boat that won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in that event this spring and finished third at the South/Central Regionals. UVa’s varsity eight is ranked seventh in the nation in the final Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll of the 2005 season.
Sauer has been in charge of the UVa women’s rowing program since its inception as a varsity sport in the fall of 1995.
The Virginia rowing team competes in the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships May 27-29 in Rancho Cordova, Calif. UVa joins Brown, Princeton and Washington as the only schools to receive team invitations to each of the nine NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships. The Cavaliers have finished in the top seven in the team competition at each of the eight previous NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships.
Virginia won the overall championship and the South Region Championship at the South/Central Regionals on May 15 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Cavaliers won championships in both the second varsity eight and the varsity four competitions at that regatta. UVa crews finished second in the novice eight, third in the varsity eight and the second novice eight, and fourth in the open four.
Virginia also won its sixth consecutive ACC Championship on April 23 in Clemson, S.C.
