CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia assistant women’s basketball coach Tim Taylor has stepped down from his position, the Department of Athletics announced on Friday.

“I’ve put a lot of consideration into this decision,” Taylor said. “We’ve had a lot of family health issues in the past year, and it has made me think about what is truly important to Tim Taylor. The best decision for myself and my family is to step down and allow others to pursue the dream.

“I’d definitely like to thank Debbie Ryan, the staff, and the administration for a tremendous five years, and I will always cherish my experience here at Virginia. I have met many wonderful people that have been a big influence in my life. I especially want to thank the players for the wonderful memories and for making my time here fun, especially for my family.”

Taylor completed five seasons on the UVa sidelines, helping the Cavaliers to four NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2004, he was promoted to recruiting coordinator. He was the lead recruiter for the 2004 class that was rated 10th in the nation by Blue Star Index and 15th by the All-Star Girls’ Report.

“Tim has done an outstanding job here at Virginia,” head coach Debbie Ryan said. “He has been an excellent recruiter, a very hard working coach, and an invaluable asset to our program. We will all miss him tremendously. I would like to thank him for all he has done for us and wish he and his family the best in the future.”

Taylor joined the Virginia women’s basketball staff prior to the 2000-01 season after working two years at Furman University. He was primarily responsible for the Paladin post players. He coached two All-Southern Conference post players, including two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year Jackie Smith. The Paladins finished second in the Southern Conference during the 1999-2000 regular season and won the conference tournament championship to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

A native of Madison, Va., Taylor was the head coach for girls basketball and softball at Woodbridge High School in Woodbridge, Va., from 1995-98. At Woodbridge, Taylor developed four post players who went on to receive Division I scholarships and led the Vikings to three consecutive regional appearances.

Taylor began his coaching career as the assistant boys’ and girls’ basketball coach at Madison County High School. He is a 1989 graduate of James Madison University with a degree in political science.

Taylor is married to the former Tonya Daughtry, and the couple has a daughter, Jordan (6) and two sons, Dalton (4) and Jackson (1). The family resides in Madison.
