COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Virginia sophomore point guard Sharneé Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) has earned one of 12 spots on the USA U19 World Championship Qualifying Team, USA Basketball announced on Monday.
Over the weekend, the USA U19 women’s basketball team captured the gold medal at the 2005 International Sports Invitational, held at San Diego State University, with a 73-57 win over Russia. Zoll saw action in all four games, earning a starting role against China in game three.
The squad, coached by Duke’s Gail Goestenkors, finished the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. The U.S. team will train on June 28-July 2 in Colorado Springs, Colo.; on July 3-6 at American University in Washington, D.C.; and on July 7-11 in Budapest, Hungary, before playing two exhibition games in Hungary. The FIBA U19 World Championship is slated for July 15-24 in Hammamet and Tunis, Tunisia.
A 5-7 point guard, Zoll was named Virginia’s Rookie of the Year. The ACC Honorable Mention All-Freshman honoree also earned the Pre-Season Conditioning and Best Player in Practice Awards. Dishing out a freshman record 159 assists (formerly held by All-American Dawn Staley in 1989 with 144 assists), Zoll led the team in assists. She scored a career-high 20 points against No. 12 Minnesota in the NCAA second round. She also participated in the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival team the last two seasons.
