The USA held the Canadians scoreless for the final 25 minutes of the first half while scoring four goals over that period, including two from Lauren Aumiller in the span of two minutes, to take a lead they would not relinquish en route to a 15-7 win at the United States Naval Academy in the IFWLA World Cup. Carney had six goals in the game to lead all players, while Kelly Amonte-Hiller had five draw controls to lead the game. The USA is now 3-0 in pool play and faces undefeated Australia tomorrow (June 26) at 2:00.
The USA’s Bonnie Rosen won the opening draw of the game, but the two teams traded turnovers before Sommar picked up an overthrown ball to give the ball back to the Americans. The Stars and Stripes attempted to bring the ball upfield before turning the ball over again, but Kara Cooke checked the ball free and Carney scooped up the ground ball, giving the USA possession again. A Cherie Greer shot was saved, and Amonte-Hiller picked up the loose ball. The Americans worked the ball to Carney, who took the ball from the top and scored at 2:13 to take the early lead. Amonte-Hiller won the draw to herself, and the Americans worked the ball to Crista Samaras, who took a shot that was saved. The Canadians attempted to clear the ball, but Cooke again caused a turnover and USA keeper Chris Lindsey came up with the loose ball. The Americans lost the ball out of bounds on the clear, and the Canadians came back on a 2v1 breakaway to tie the game at 4:08. Crysti Foote won the draw for the Canadians and got the ball to Jen Johnson, who fed Jess Brownridge for a goal 48 seconds after Foote’s goal to give the Canadians the lead 2-1 at 4:56.
From there, the American defense shut down the Maple Leaf offense. The Canadians won the draw after taking the lead, but threw the ball out of bounds to give the USA the ball. Greer passed the ball to Lindsey, who cleared the ball to Carney, who in turn gave the ball to Jo Connelly. Connelly passed the ball to Cooke, who worked her way into the arc and scored at 6:23 to tie the game at 2-2. Again the Canadians won the draw, but Lindsey made a save on the shot, giving the Americans the possession. The teams traded turnovers, with Carney causing the turnover for the Americans and getting possession of the ball, starting a fast break. A Dani Gallagher shot went wide, and a Carney shot was saved, giving the Maple Leafs the ball. They turned the ball over with a throw out of bounds, and the Americans worked the ball up to Randall Goldsborough, who settled the attack. Amonte-Hiller drew a shooting space foul, but her shot was saved and the Canadians took possession.
They threw the ball away on the resulting clear, and Gallagher picked up the loose ball. The Stars and Stripes worked the ball up to Carney, who worked her way around in the arc and scored at 16:52 to give the USA the lead. Again the Maple Leafs won the draw, and they were able to get off a shot and retain possession, but they lost the ball out of bounds and Amonte-Hiller was there to get possession for the Americans. The Americans, however, turned the ball over and Johnson got off a shot that Lindsey saved but the Canadians retained possession. Cooke caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball, but the Americans lost the ball on the clear and the Canadians tried to take the ball upfield, but they lost it on an overthrown pass and Lindsey was there to pick up the loose ball.
At the other end of the field, Amonte-Hiller drew a foul in the arc and she passed the ball off to Samaras, who took a shot that was saved but rebounded out into the arc. Lauren Aumiller grubbed the ball and stuck it back in the cage for a goal at 22:27. Amonte-Hiller won the draw to herself and the Americans tried to bring the ball upfield but turned it over. Carney, however, got possession back to the Americans with a caused turnover and picking up the loose ball. The USA again lost the ball, but Connelly and Carney doubled the ball and caused the Canadian to drop the ball. Cooke picked up the ball and the USA worked the ball upfield to Greer, who took a shot. Amonte-Hiller was there to pick up the loose ball and the Americans reset their offense. Samaras drew a shooting space foul, and she passed the ball off to Aumiller, who scored at 25:07. Amonte-Hiller won the draw to herself, and Samaras was able to get off a shot that went wide. The Americans retained possession, and a Goldsborough shot was saved, giving possession to the Canadians. The Maple Leafs worked the ball upfield, but a pass through the arc was intercepted by Lindsey, stopping the Canadian threat. The teams went into halftime with the USA up 5-2.
The Canadians won the opening draw of the second half and scored 41 seconds in as Foote took a feed into the arc. Amonte-Hiller again won the draw and the Americans got the ball to Sommar, whose shot was saved but Goldsborough was there to get the loose ball. Her shot went wide, but the Yanks kept possession. Carney was awarded a free position shot as she was tripped on the way to the cage. Her shot went wide, and the Canadians got possession and cleared the ball up the field before throwing an errant pass that was collected by keeper Jess Wilk. The Americans lost the ball on the clear, but an errant pass was collected by Aumiller, starting a fast break. Samaras led a pass to Gallagher, who scored at 36:47 to move the margin back to three at 6-3.
Canada again won the draw, but they turned the ball over and Connelly came out of a muddle with the ball. The Americans settled the attack at the other end, and Carney took the ball from the top to score two minutes after Gallagher to take a 7-3 lead.
Amonte-Hiller won the draw to herself, and the Americans drew a foul as Goldsborough was fouled on the way to the cage. She ran the ball into the cage, and scored 33 seconds after Carney to give the USA an 8-3 lead.Goldsborough won the ensuing draw, and the Americans quickly settled the attack. Gallagher passed the ball to the opposite post from behind the cage, and Aumiller quicksticked the ball into the cage 47 seconds after Goldsborough’s goal to push the margin up to 9-3. Gallagher won the draw, and she got the ball to Carney, who used excellent stickwork to get into the arc and shot the ball into the net, putting the USA in double digits at 40:20.
The Canadians won the draw and got off a shot, but Wilk was there to make the save. The Americans cleared the ball and again scored on an opposite post quick stick as Samaras fed Aumiller, who scored at 41:21 to make the score 11-3. The Maple Leafs won the draw and scored 29 seconds after Aumiller to stop the 6-0 run.
Gallagher won the draw, but the Americans lost the ball and the Canadians advanced the ball upfield before Kate Kaiser caused a turnover and Rachael Becker was there to scoop up the ground ball. At the other end of the field a Goldsborough shot was saved, but Carney got the ball at the top of the arc and took the ball in, scoring at 43:37 to push the margin back to eight at 12-4. Canada won the draw and scored on a crease roll, and they won the ensuing draw and advanced the ball upfield where a low shot found its way into the cage two minutes later to pull the Maple Leafs within six at 12-6 at the 46:44 mark of the game.
Sommar won the draw but the Americans lost the ball before Becker made a great play to strip the ball from her opponent. In the American offensive zone, a Sommar shot was saved and the Canadians took possession. As the Canadians attempted the clear, Kaiser caused a turnover and Gallagher was there to pick up the loose ball. The Americans set their offense, and Cooke drew a foul in the arc. She passed the ball off to Carney, who scored at 51:56 to give the USA a 13-6 lead. Kaiser won the draw, but the Americans lost the ball and the Canadians took the ball upfield where they scored to pull within six again at 54:56.
The Americans answered as Canada won the draw control but Becker stole the ball away and the Yanks went on a fast break, where Carney dumped the ball into Sommar, who scored at 55:54, less than a minute after the Canada goal. Again the Canadians won the draw, but again Becker stripped the ball away. The Americans took the ball upfield where Aumiller was fouled on the way to the cage. She converted the shot at 59:19 for her fifth goal of the game. Aumiller won the draw to preserve the win.
The USA next plays Australia, who defeated England 15-4 earlier today, on Sunday (June 26) at 2:00.
