CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head softball coach Karen Johns has announced the hiring of Carie Dever-Boaz as assistant coach of the Cavaliers’ softball program. Dever-Boaz comes to Virginia after one season as an assistant coach under Johns at the University of Florida.

Dever-Boaz is a very familiar face for Johns. In addition to the 2005 season as Johns’ offensive and fielders coach at Florida, Johns and Dever-Boaz coached together under Joyce Compton at South Carolina from 1993 to 1995. Dever-Boaz brings a wealth of softball knowledge to Charlottesville with over 16 years of experience at the collegiate level as both a player and coach.

“I am glad to continue my working relationship with Carie at the University of Virginia,” said Johns. “Her expertise in pitching and teaching pitching will be a valuable part of the development of our program.”

In 1995, Dever-Boaz was hired as the head coach for Arkansas’ inaugural softball season. In eight seasons as the leader of the Arkansas softball program, Dever-Boaz compiled five Southeastern Conference Tournament appearances and two NCAA Regional berths. In 1999, the SEC named Dever-Boaz Coach of the Year after leading the Razorbacks to a 46-29 record and a runner-up finish in the conference tournament.

“I am extremely excited to become a part of such an incredible tradition,” said Dever-Boaz. “The opportunity to work with Karen to take Virginia to a national level is a fantastic challenge.”

As a pitcher and third basemen for Fresno State University, Dever-Boaz reached the College World Series four times and the championship game in three consecutive seasons (1988, 1989 and 1990). In recognition of her excellence at the NCAA championships, Dever-Boaz was elected to the All-Tournament team on two separate occasions (1988 and 1989). Dever-Boaz also was a three-time second team All-American (1988, 1989, and 1990) and as a senior she was named Big West Conference Player of the Year.

Not only was Dever-Boaz successful on the field, but in the classroom. Dever-Boaz was a two-time Academic All-American (1988 and 1990) and was named Big West Scholar of the Year in 1990.

Dever-Boaz began her coaching career upon graduation from Fresno State in 1990 as the head varsity softball and volleyball coach at Tulare Western High School in Tulare, Calif. In her spare time, Dever-Boaz conducts international softball clinics in Canada and Holland and recently authored “The Art of Pitching” and five instructional softball videos.

Dever is married to Bruce Dever-Boaz. Together, they have a ten-year-old son, Max.
