DAYTON, Ohio – Second-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) and first-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) combined for 29 kills and a .529 hitting percentage, but it wasn’t enough as the Virginia volleyball team fell 3-0 (30-28, 30-26, 30-25) to Mississippi State Saturday afternoon (September 10) in the Marriott Flyer Invitational at the Frericks Center. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 1-1 in the tournament and 2-3 on the season. Mississippi State improves to 2-0 in the tourney and 6-0 on the year. UVa closes out play in the Marriott Flyer Invitational with a 5:00 p.m. match against Indiana State.
Sarah Kirkwood led UVa with 15 kills and a .560 hitting percentage, while Davis tallied 14 kills while hitting .500. Third-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) recorded match-high 43 assists, while second-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas/Stratford) led the Cavaliers’ defensive effort with 15 digs. Second-year outside hitter Emily Perilli (Thompson’s Station, Tenn./Page) added 10 digs. Third-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas/Elkins) registered seven kills, seven digs and two service aces, while second-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va./Evangel Christian School) had seven kills and three blocks.
Rachel Cooper led Mississippi State with 19 kills, a .515 hitting percentage, and six digs. Orshi Kriegel registered a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Setter Eva Kriegel notched 31 assists, nine digs, seven kills and three service aces. Megan Lukasek paced all players in digs and service aces with 21 and five, respectively.
Mississippi State hit .328 as a team in the match, while the Cavaliers hit .243. UVa had 51 kills compared to 53 for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State held a 64-58 edge in digs and an 11-3 advantage in service aces. Both teams recorded four blocks.
The Bulldogs hit .390 in winning the first game 30-28. UVa nearly matched Mississippi State’s hitting percentage in the opening game with a mark of .385. The Bulldogs continued their hot hitting with a .306 mark while taking the second game 30-26. UVa hit .160 in the second game. Mississippi closed out the match with a 30-25 victory in the third game and outhit UVa .293 to .216.
