Virginia’s Katie Phillips notched two goals on short corner plays to tie the game in the second half, and the Cavalier defense held the Wildcats off the scoreboard for a stretch of 56:00, but the Cats scored in extra time to take the victory 4-3 on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Cavaliers (2-3) outshot host Northwestern 25-15 and had more short corners (11-10).
Northwestern took the early lead as Noreen Stewart scored off a broken corner, putting in a rebound at 19:48. The Cavaliers answered minutes later as the Virginia defense worked the ball out of the back, with Biffy Cornelison sent the ball up the pitch to Mia Link, who got the ball to Phillips in the circle. Phillips got off a shot but was fouled and drew the short corner. On the play, Link scored off the second rebound of a corner, tying the game 1-1. Northwestern scored again, less than a minute later, as Stewart tipped in an entry pass to the circle to give the Cats the 2-1 lead. The Cavaliers trailed at halftime 2-1 despite outshooting NU 8-4 and having the advantage in penalty corners 5-2.
NU scored early in the second half as Holly Palin scored on a reverse stick chip just 3:23 into the stanza, putting the ‘Cats up by two. The Cavalier defense held strong, and although UVA surrendered a corner, Link flew out on defense and started a break that saw her lay the ball up to Lindsay O’Bannon. The Hoos lost the ball over the endline, but on the ensuing free hit Allie Flynn intercepted the pass and sent it up to Phillips, who drew a corner. On the play, Sarah Miller stopped the ball and sent it left to Phillips, who fired the shot to the boards for a goal at 41:09.
Minutes later the Cavaliers again came up with the ball as Erin Hayes made a defensive stop and Flynn took the ball into the circle where she drew another short corner. Again, Flynn sent the ball over to Phillips after the insert and Phillips notched her second goal of the game, tying the contest at 3-3 at 44:22.
The Cavalier defense allowed only one shot after the goal in the second period, and at the other end of the field, the Cavaliers forced corner after corner, taking nine shots in the second half, but the teams went to the end of regulation tied 3-3.
In the first overtime period, the Cavaliers outshot the ‘Cats 6-5, but Blair was up to the task, denying NU four times, including one point-blank opportunity and with the Cats holding one short corner in the frame. The Virginia offense continued to pressure the Northwestern defense, coming up with a number of interceptions. When the Cats did break through, Erin Hayes and Dana Anderson continued to stymie the NU attack.
In the second session of overtime, the Hoos were able to draw a corner but they were unable to convert. At the other end of the field, NU drew a corner after Sarah Miller made a brilliant play to stop the ball from going in an empty net. On the ensuing corner, the Cats scored as Ellen Schlafly scored on a rebound, hitting the ball high to the nets to end the game at 94:23.
