Kirkwood Sisters Named To Marriott Flyer Invitational All-Tournament Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball players Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) and Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) were named to the Marriott Flyer Invitational All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the tournament, which was held September 9-10 at the Frericks Center on the campus of the University of Dayton.

UVa went 2-1 in the tournament. The Cavaliers defeated host Dayton 3-2 and Indiana State 3-0, while falling to Mississippi State 3-0.

Emily Kirkwood, a third-year setter, tallied 81 assists, 13 digs, seven kills, and six service aces over 11 games in the tournament. In a five-game win over Dayton, Kirkwood tallied 38 assists, six kills, five digs and three service aces.

Sarah Kirkwood, a second-year outside hitter, notched 43 kills, a .363 hitting percentage, 11 digs, four assists, four service aces and four blocks. Kirkwood tallied a .560 hitting percentage with 15 kills in a 3-0 loss to Mississippi State. She also had 16 kills against Dayton.

Virginia stands at 3-3 on the season and returns to action this weekend when it hosts the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament. UVa opens the tournament with a 7:00 p.m. match on Friday (September 16) against Appalachian State. The Cavaliers take on Liberty and Albany on Saturday (September 17) at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively. Admission to all home Virginia volleyball matches is free of charge.
