Virginia Stands Third at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. – The Virginia women’s golf team stands third after the first day of the the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic on Sunday. The 17-team tourney, originally slated to tee off on Sept. 12, began a day early due to the threat of inclement weather created by Hurricane Ophelia.

Tennessee holds a two-stroke advantage with a 581 (+5), while Georgia is second with a 583 (+7). The Cavaliers shot a 591 (+15) to stand third, the highest finish of the seven ACC schools participating.

Tennessee’s Nicole Smith fired a two-under 142 to hold a one-stroke edge. Charleston’s Angie Hill, Georgia’s Whitney Wade, and Virginia’s Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) are tied for second with a one-under 143 each.

Sophomore Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Fla.) is tied for fifth with an even 144. Wigger and Mielbrecht each shot a two-under 70 in the second round. Defending Cougar Classic medalist and junior Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) is tied for 32nd with a 151 (+7). Junior Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) follows with a 155 (+11), while freshman Carly Truitt (Marysville, Ohio) shot a 157 (+13) in her collegiate debut.

The final round of Cougar Classic tees off at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12.
