Virginia Volleyball To Open Home Schedule This Weekend

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team opens the home portion of its 2005 schedule by hosting the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Volleyball Tournament Friday and Saturday, September 16-17. The tournament, which features Virginia, Albany, Appalachian State, and Liberty, will be held in Memorial Gymnasium, the home of Virginia Volleyball. Admission to all home UVa volleyball matches is free of charge.

The 2005 version of the tournament opens Friday (September 16) at 5:00 p.m. with Albany playing Liberty. UVa begins play in the tournament with a 7:00 p.m. match against Appalachian State. Saturday’s (September 17) action begins at 11:00 a.m. with Appalachian State meeting Albany. At 1:00 p.m. Virginia hosts Liberty. The evening session begins at 5:00 p.m. with Liberty taking on Appalachian State. The tourney concludes with UVa playing Albany at 7:00 p.m. Former Cavalier assistant coach Kelly Sheffield coaches Albany.

“Our road weary team is looking forward to the friendly confines of Mem,” said head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton. “We hope all our fans will come out and support us as we open our 2005 home schedule with three great matches this weekend.”

Virginia stands at 3-3 on the season. The Cavaliers finished third in the season-opening Texas A&M/McDonald’s Invitational (September 2-3) with a 1-2 record with both losses coming against nationally-ranked St. Mary’s (Calif.) and Texas A&M. Virginia then placed second in the Marriott Flyer Invitational (September 9-10) with a 2-1 mark. Albany stands at 6-2 on the season, while Appalachian State is 6-3 and Liberty is 3-5.
