Today’s Game: The Cavaliers conclude a three-game homestand Saturday night when they host NC State in the ACC opener. Virginia is 3-0-1 on the season and is yet to allow a goal this season. NC State (3-2-1) is unbeaten in its last four games (3-0-1) and are coming off a 2-2 tie with No. 2 North Carolina Wednesday in which they gave up a go-ahead goal with 56 seconds remaining, only to draw even with a goal in the final second of play.
The Series vs. NC State: Saturday’s game is the 61st all-time meeting between the schools with Virginia holding a 38-16-6 edge in the series. Virginia has won 12 of the last 15 meetings (12-3-0) including a 2-1 win at Klöckner Stadium last season. Virginia has a 7-0-0 all-time record against the Wolfpack at Klöckner Stadium and have won 12 straight against NC State in Charlottesville. No current Cavalier player was born yet the last time the Wolfpack won in Charlottesville, 3-1 in 1980.
ACC Openers: Saturday’s game is the ACC opener for the Cavaliers. Virginia has an all-time record of 30-17-4 in conference openers. Recently, the Cavaliers have been strong to start off ACC play, posting a 20-3-3 record in ACC openers since 1979, including a 5-2-2 record under George Gelnovatch. Saturday’s game marks the first time since 1978 that Virginia hasn’t opened ACC play against either Maryland or Wake Forest.
No Goals For You: The Cavaliers have posted shutouts in each of the first four games of the season for the first time in school history (The Cavaliers opened the 1979, 1988, and 2004 seasons with three consecutive shutouts). The four consecutive shutouts isn’t even halfway to the school record for consecutive shutouts of 10 set in 1987.
Two Games, Two Goals: First-year Yannick Reyering has scored in each of his first two career games (after missing the first two games of the season). The last time a Cavalier scored a goal in each of his first two games was Alecko Eskandarian in 2000.
Cavaliers Record 600th All-Time Victory: With the 4-0 win over Longwood on September 14, the Cavaliers posted the 600th win in school history, becoming the first ACC school to accomplish the feat. Virginia currently has an all-time record of 600-273-84.
