CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 13 ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer team snapped a three match winless streak with a 7-1 win over St. Bonaventure Friday night at Klockner Stadium. Seven different Cavaliers scored a goal on the night as they outshot the Bonnies 32-2 in the contest.

The Cavaliers (4-2-1) attacked from the start and took the lead in the 10th minute as Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) made a long run dribbling through the Bonnie defense before firing a shot into the net from six yards out. In the 18th minute, Rostedt again made a run through the St. Bonaventure defense, but was fouled in the box resulting in a penalty kick, which was made by Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.). A minute later the Cavaliers struck again as Rostedt collected a ball along the end line and fed a pass to Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita), who one-timed a goal from 10 yards out. Virginia closed out the first half scoring in the 34th minute when Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) took a free kick from the flank that Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.) headed off the post and in for her first career goal. Virginia took that 4-0 advantage into halftime after outshooting the Bonnies 20-0 in the half.

St. Bonaventure (1-6-0) struck first in the second half in the 57th minute. After Laura Comeau (Lee, N.H.) made a save on the Bonnies’ first shot of the night, the rebound came to Jacquee Parmiter who fed Heather MacDougall for a tap-in goal. Virginia responded ten minutes later with three goals in the four-minute span. Ariel Thompson (Salem, Va.) delivered a cross from the end line that Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio) one-timed into the net in the 66th minute. Two minutes later, Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) delivered a through ball to Thompson who scored on the breakaway. In the 69th minute, Curtis sent a ball to Kara Frederick (Woodbridge, Va.) who was making a run on the wing. Frederick dribbled to inside the box and fired a shot of the near post into the net for the final goal of the game.

In addition to outshooting St. Bonaventure 32-2 in the game, the Cavaliers had a 6-0 corner kick advantage. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) didn’t need to make a save while playing in net in the first half while Comeau, making her collegiate debut, made one save. Lisa Eberhart made 12 saves for St. Bonaventure.

“This was a good game for us to get some confidence,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “It was good to see some balls go into the back of the net. We were able to get some bench players some extended minutes which will only help our depth. It was a good sign that we had seven different scorers because that shows the versatility of our attack.”

The Cavaliers conclude their four-game homestand on Sunday as they host Richmond. Game time at Klockner Stadium is 5:00 p.m.
