Stats

The Virginia field hockey defense allowed Monmouth (1-6) only one shot and two corners as the Cavaliers defeated the Hawks 5-0 today (Sep 18) in Charlottesville. On the other side of the ball, the Cavaliers (4-3) had 33 shots and 10 corners, scoring five goals as five different Cavaliers got on the boards today, including Lucy Meyers, Leigh Giacco, and Christie Kellam, all of whom scored their first career collegiate goal. Dana Anderson, a member of the Virginia backfield, scored her first goal in 47 games, and Allison Flynn also scored. Katie Phillips notched assists on the first three Virginia goals, tying the second-highest number of assists by an individual in a game in school history. Virginia’s Amy Desjadon started her second consecutive game in goal and notched her first career shutout.

The Cavaliers drew the first short corner of the game as Phillips intercepted a pass and took the ball into the circle where she drew a foul. Virginia continued to press offensively, but the first goal came as a result of a build from the backfield, as Erin Hayes sent the ball upfield to Amy Marotta, who carried the ball up to Phillips, who took the ball into the circle. Phillips’ initial shot was saved by Monmouth’s Carrie Colbert, but the ball came right back out to Phillips who tapped it over to Meyers. Meyers buried the ball into the far boards, putting the Cavaliers on top 1-0 at 17:14.

It was defense again that started the second goal as Anderson block tackled the ball away and gained possession, making a run up the left side of the pitch. She entered the circle and gave the ball to Phillips, who again took a shot that was saved but came back out to her. This time Phillips slid the ball over to Anderson, who scored at 28:27, giving the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead. Virginia took a 2-0 lead into the break holding a 16-0 advantage in shots.

The Hoos converted quickly in the second as a Marotta free hit on the left side of the pitch was played dangerously by a Monmouth defender just outside the circle. On the restart, Margaretha Ehret hit a ball back outside to Flynn, who attacked the circle and drew a corner. On the short corner, the Cavaliers executed a variation to the right in which Phillips took the ball left and passed it across the center to Flynn on the right, who hit the ball into the cage for a goal at 36:50.

Seven minutes later the Cavaliers’ offensive pressure resulted in another goal as Meyers hit a long ball up to Lindsey O’Bannon, who pulled around her defender and attacked the circle from the side. She sent the ball to the stroke mark to a streaking Christie Kellam, who scored on her first touch of the ball in the game, giving UVa a 4-0 lead at 43:50.

It was a defensive stop again that started the sequence for Virginia’s fifth goal. Hayes sent a long ball up the side of the field and Giacco caught up to it centimeters before the endline. Giacco attacked the circle and shot the ball, but her initial shot was saved by Colbert. Giacco collected the rebound and buried the ball in the boards for her first career goal, giving Virginia a 5-0 lead with 3:51 to play.

With time winding down in regulation, the Hawks were able to draw their second corner of the contest. On the play, the direct strike was whistled dangerous and called dead, and Virginia won the contest in a shutout.

The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday, Sept 21 as they travel to William & Mary. Game time is 7:00 pm.
