The University of Virginia field hockey team upset #19 William & Mary 1-0 tonight (Sep 21) in Williamsburg behind Amy Desjadon’s eight saves and Lindsey O’Bannon’s first-half goal. The Cavaliers (5-3) constructed their second consecutive shutout, holding the Tribe (4-4) off the boards, despite the College taking 14 shots. Virginia’s Biffy Cornelison had a defensive save in the final flurry to preserve the shutout.
The Cavaliers attacked early, but the William & Mary defense did not allow any appreciable looks at the cage, and the Tribe generated counterattacks that resulted in a couple short corners in the first half. It was a Virginia counterattack, however, that sprung the goal.
Amy Marotta led the ball up the left side of the pitch to O’Bannon, who took the ball to the endline and advanced the ball into the circle. There she pulled right around the Tribe keeper and put the ball in the empty cage for what would be the only goal of the night. Virginia led 1-0 at the halftime break.
In the second half, William & Mary pushed the pace and drew eight corners in the period, while the Cavaliers did not draw a short corner until the 63rd minute of play. Desjadon made seven saves in the second half, while Cornelison kept the shutout alive with a defensive save in a flurry in the 67th minute.
Virginia returns to action on Sunday, Sep. 25 as the Cavaliers host ACC foe Boston College. Game time against the Eagles is 1:00 pm.
