WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 11 ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer team opened up its conference season with a 1-0 win over No. 15 Wake Forest at Spry Stadium. With the victory, the Cavaliers improve to 6-2-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in the ACC, while Wake Forest falls to 5-2-1, 0-1-0 ACC.

The Cavaliers came out strong and took a lead in the 17th minute. Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio) fired a shot off the crossbar, but the rebound came right to Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.) who headed home the rebound for her fourth goal of the season. That goal was all the Cavaliers needed, as the Virginia defense posted its fifth shutout of the season.

The Demon Deacons outshot Virginia 10-8 in the game, marking the first time since a 2002 NCAA Tournament game at West Virginia that the Cavaliers have won when being outshot. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made four saves for the Cavaliers, while posting her third shutout of the season. The shutout was also the 16th career shutout for de Vries, one shy of the Cavalier school record.

“I thought we started very well tonight and got a very deserving goal,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We had to absorb their attack towards the end of the first half, but after that I thought we played a very smart second half. We battled hard tonight and it is always good to get a win on the road against a quality opponent.”

The Cavaliers will be on the road again this weekend against a ranked ACC foe as they visit No. 7 Duke on Sunday. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
