Cavaliers Continue Play at UVa Fall Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team continued play Saturday at the fourth annual UVa Fall Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers will have one singles player and three doubles teams competing for titles on Sunday.

In singles Flight A, Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) won a pair of matches to advance to the semifinals. Devvarman defeated Nate Emge of Kentucky 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16 before dispatching Josh Cohen of Miami, a 5-8 seed, 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Devvarman, the No. 3 seed will meet No. 2 seed Arnaud Lecloerec of VCU in the semifinals. Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) scored an upset his top-seeded teammate, Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.), in the round of 16 before falling to Luigi D’Agord of Miami in the quarterfinals. D’Agord defeated Cavalier Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) in the round of 16, and will meet Alex Hume of Kentucky in the other semifinal Sunday. Hume upset No. 4 seed Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) in the round of 16. In the B Flight, Eric Riley (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and Nick Meros (Tallahassee, Fla.) each won in the round of 16, but fell in the quarterfinals.

In doubles play, the Cavaliers had two teams advance to the Flight A semifinals. No. 3 seeded Devvarman and Huey cruised to an 8-1 win over James Spence and Alex Jago of Memphis in the first round before downing Will Shaw and Val Banada of NC State 8-5 in the quarterfinals. The team of Stewart and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) received a first round default win before upsetting top seeded Brandon Allan and Kal Scheldorn of Middle Tennessee 9-7 in the quarterfinals. In Flight B, the team of Miklo and Stephen Rozek (Chardon, Ohio) won a pair of matches to reach the semifinals.

Play at the tournament concludes on Sunday. Action begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
