NEWTON, Mass. – The No. 4 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team improved to 5-1-1 on the season, 2-0-0 in the ACC, with a wild 4-3 win at No. 21 Boston College Saturday night. The Cavaliers rallied from behind twice in the contest for the win in a game that saw two red cards and four penalty kicks.
Boston College (4-2-1, 0-1-1) took the early lead in the 8th minute when Sherron Manswell took advantage of a poor clearance and scored unassisted to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, the Cavaliers had a golden chance to tie the game, but Yannick Reyering’s (Mettingen, Germany) penalty kick was saved by Eagle keeper Issey Maholo. Boston College added to their lead in the 40th minute when the Eagles got a penalty kick that Hadrien Toure converted. The Cavaliers cut the lead in half with 21 seconds remaining before halftime when BC was called for another penalty in the box and this time Reyering scored on the penalty kick.
Virginia tied the game in the 53rd minute when Adam Cristman (Glen Allen, Va.) headed home a Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass) free kick to tie the game at 2-2. The Eagles retook the lead in the 69th minute as a second Cavalier foul in the box was called and Reuben Ayarna scored on the penalty kick. However, Ayarna, who had received a yellow card in the first half, received his second yellow card when he took off his shirt when celebrating his goal. That was the second ejection of the game as a Boston College assistant coach had shown a red card fifteen minutes earlier. Playing a man up for the final 21 minutes of the game, the Cavaliers rallied once again. Virginia tied the game in the 75th minute as Cristman scored his second goal of the night on an assist from Tierney. Reyering then scored the game-winner in the 85th minute as he headed in a Tierney corner kick.
Overall, Virginia outshot Boston College 12-10 in the game, while BC had a 4-3 corner kick advantage. Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) made two saves in net for Virginia, while Maholo made six saves for BC.
“I am very happy with the composure we had tonight under some difficult circumstances,” said Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch. “We came from behind on two occasions, at 2-0 and 3-2. When things went crazy in the game, I thought we handled the situation better than they did and that was the difference tonight.”
The Cavaliers return home on Wednesday, September 28 as they host Mt. St. Mary’s at Klockner Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
