CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 7 ranked University of Virginia women’s soccer team improved to 4-0 in the ACC for the first time in history with a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon over Miami at Klockner Stadium. Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio) scored the game’s lone goal as the Virginia defense posted its fifth consecutive shutout.

The Cavaliers (9-2-1, 4-0-0 ACC) and Hurricanes (5-7-1, 0-4-0 ACC) played a scoreless first half with few scoring chances by either team. Virginia had the best chance in the first half when Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Magarita, Calif.) had her blast saved by Miami keeper Lauren McAdam.

In the second half, the Cavaliers took the lead in the 55th minute on Curtis’ third goal of the season. Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) set up the goal as she dribbled though several Miami defenders before threading a through ball in behind the Hurricane defense to an on-running Curtis, who slid the ball past a diving McAdam.

The Cavaliers outshot Miami 12-3 in the match and had a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Laura Comeau (Lee, N.H.) made her first career start and had two saves to record her first career shutout. McAdam made three saves in net for the Hurricanes. The shutout by Virginia extends the Cavaliers’ shutout streak to 483:37, the third longest streak in school history.

“We are happy with the win, but we can’t expect to win every game 1-0,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “Miami imposed their style on us and we weren’t as sharp as we needed to be against it. There are some things we are going to need to work on that we could have done better today.”

The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday, October 6 as they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a showdown with top-ranked North Carolina. Game time at Fetzer Field is 7:00 p.m.
