TODAY’S GAME: Virginia wraps up a three-game home-stand with Monmouth (3-3-3). The Cavaliers recorded their ACC league-leading seventh shutout of the season when they blanked No. 2 North Carolina, 2-0, last Saturday night. Third-year forward Adam Cristman scored the game-winning goal and added an assist while First-year forward Yannick Reyering had the other goal. Third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke picked up his seventh shutout in goal. He now sports a 0.65 GAA. Monmouth (3-3-3) has tied two straight games and will be looking for its first win since a 3-1 victory over NJIT.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE CAVALIERS: Adam Cristman and Yannick Reyering each scored a goal and UVa picked up its seventh shutout of the season as the Cavaliers defeated No. 2 North Carolina, 2-0, in front of 3,104 fans at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers (7-1-1, 3-0-0 ACC) remained undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference and gave head coach George Gelnovatch his 150th career win.Cristman’s seventh goal of the season gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead at the 50:58 mark. Virginia outshot North Carolina, 13-9. North Carolina held the advantage on corner kicks, 8-4. Virginia goalie Ryan Burke picked up three saves.
ABOUT MONMOUTH: The Hawks (3-3-3) will be looking for their first win since a 3-1 victory back on Sept. 17 against New Jersey Institute & Tech. Monmouth has tied Long Island, 0-0, and St. Joseph’s,0-0, in its last two outtings, but the Hawks have failed to score goals. Sophomore forward Tom Gray leads the team with three goals, five assists and 11 points. Senior goalkeeper Art Satterwhite has played 887 minutes in goal for Hawks. Satterwhite boasts a 1.01 GAA while recording 32 saves and four shutouts.
THE SERIES vs. MONMOUTH: This will be the first ever meeting between Virginia and Monmouth. However, it will be the second of three meetings between Virginia and a school from the Northeast Conference in 2005. The Cavaliers defeated Mount Saint Mary’s last Wednesday, 4-0. UVa still has a game against St. Francis (N.Y.) scheduled for Oct. 12.
BURKE EARNS WEEKLY HONORS: Third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week after his performance against Mount St. Mary’s and No. 2 North Carolina. Burke posted back-to-back shutouts last week at home as UVa defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 4-0, and the Tar Heels, 2-0. Burke was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. On the season, Burke has posted an ACC league leading seven shutouts while also ranking third in the conference with a 0.65 GAA.
