TULSA, Okla. – Three Cavaliers advanced in singles during the second day of the 2005 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa. Jarrett Chirico (Sarasota, Fla.), Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) all advanced on Tuesday and are a win away from qualifying for the main draw.
Chirico, ranked No. 125 nationally, cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 second round win over Niklas Persson of Denver. He will meet No. 97 ranked Max Jones of New Mexico in the final round of qualifying. Huey, ranked No. 122 nationally, advanced with a three-set win over No. 91 ranked Brett Ross of Wake Forest, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Huey will meet No. 82 ranked Ytai Abougzir of Florida State in the final round of qualifying. Miklo, ranked No. 61 nationally, defeated Peter Bjork of Colorado, 6-4, 6-4, on Tuesday. Miklo will meet No. 70 ranked Andrew Hamar of Wake Forest on Wednesday.
Chirico, Huey, and Miklo are trying to advance to the main draw of the tournament, which begins on Thursday. Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.), Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India), Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) are already in the main draw.
The doubles qualifying draw began on Tuesday with the teams of Rizza and Eric Riley (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and Chirico and Miklo competing. Rizza and Riley fell 8-6 to Dominik Kaufhold and James Ludlow of BYU in the first round of qualifying. Miklo and Chirico defeated Ivan Bjelica and Philippe Frayssinoux of Mississippi State 8-4 in the first round before falling to Brad Pomeroy and Raian Luchici of North Carolina 8-3 in the second round. The team of Devvarman and Huey are already in the main draw of doubles.
