CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 5 Virginia women’s soccer team suffered its first ACC loss of the season, falling in double overtime 2-1 to top ranked North Carolina Thursday night. The ACC co-leaders battled through constant rain from the remnants of Hurricane Tammy before the Tar Heels captured the win with just under six minutes to play in the second overtime.

The Tar Heels got the first scoring chance of the game in the 17th minute, as Lori Chalupny’s bicycle kick was saved by Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.). However, North Carolina would find the back of the net a minute later on an Elizabeth Guess breakaway. Guess’ first shot was saved by de Vries, but Guess jumped on the rebound and scored to give the Tar Heels the lead. The score would remain 1-0 at halftime after North Carolina had a 12-0 shot advantage before the break.

The Tar Heels continued their pressure early in the second half. However, several big saves by de Vries kept the score at 1-0. Virginia would answer in the 64th minute as Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) sent a cross into the box that was headed by Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.) past Tar Heel keeper Aly Winget into the net. The teams traded chances for the rest of the second half but neither team could score and regulation ended with the score 1-1.

After the teams played a scoreless first overtime, the Tar Heels took advantage of a chance midway through the second overtime. After a UNC corner kick, the ball was batted around like a pinball in the Cavalier penalty area. De Vries made saves on the first two shots by Lindsay Tarpley before Heather O’Reilly knocked in the rebound to give the Tar Heels the win.

Overall, North Carolina outshot Virginia 28-8 in the game. De Vries made a career-high 14 saves in the game for Virginia, while Winget made three saves for North Carolina.

“I was pleased with our effort tonight, especially in the second half,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We played six freshman tonight who had never played against North Carolina before and it took us 30-40 minutes to get settled. Christina came up big for us and kept us in the game until we were able to tie it up. After that, it was anyone’s game.”

North Carolina improves to 13-0-0 overall, 5-0-0 in the ACC with the win while the Cavaliers fall to 9-3-1 overall, 4-1-1 in the ACC. Virginia returns home on Sunday as the Cavaliers host Clemson at Klockner Stadium. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
