Huey, Rizza Advance at All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – Two Cavaliers advanced to the round of 16 of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) each won two matches on Thursday to reach the round of 16.
Huey, who reached the main draw by winning three matches in the qualifying draw earlier in the week, continued his strong play on Thursday. In the first round, Huey defeated No. 46 ranked James Wan of Stanford 6-2, 6-2. In the afternoon, Huey upset the tournament’s No. 16 seed, Devin Mullings of Ohio State, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. Huey will meet No. 44 ranked Adam Holmstrom of Denver in the third round on Friday.
Rizza, the tournament’s No. 13 seed, also reached the round of 16 with a pair of victories. In the first round, Rizza defeated No. 86 ranked Strahinja Bobusic of Georgia, 6-1, 6-1. Rizza then posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Juan Pablo Di Cesare of Mississippi in the second round. Rizza will meet No. 5 ranked Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M in the third round.
Three other Cavaliers were in the main draw, but lost in the first round on Thursday. No. 10 seeded Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was upset in three sets by No. 41 ranked Roger Gubser of Texas. No. 45 ranked Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) fell in three sets to No. 11 seed Luke Shields of Boise State. No. 61 ranked Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) lost in straight sets to No. 8 seed KC Corkery of Stanford.
In doubles, the Cavaliers had one team competing in the main draw. The No. 8 seeded team of Devvarman and Huey opened play with an 8-4 first round win over No. 34 ranked Rafael Abreu and Jacopo Tezza of TCU. They will meet No. 17 ranked Lars Poerschke and Matija Zgaga of Baylor in the second round Friday.
