BLACKSBURG, Va. – Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.) had two goals and two assists as the No. 5 Virginia women’s soccer team downed Virginia Tech 4-0 Thursday night at the Virginia Tech Soccer Field. The Cavaliers improve to 11-3-1 on the season, 6-1-0 in the ACC, while the Hokies fall to 5-9-1, 1-6-0 in the conference.

The Cavaliers jumped out quickly and took a 1-0 lead in the second minute. Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio) sent a cross to the far post that Keselica headed home for the first goal of the game. Virginia struck again three minutes later when Keselica hit a cross that Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) tapped into the net as she slid through the box. Keselica tallied her second goal of the game in the 26th minute as Curtis threaded a ball to her that Keselica dribbled into the box and placed a shot just inside the far post. The Cavaliers took that 3-0 advantage into halftime. In the second half, the Cavaliers added another goal in the 75th minute as Alli Fries (Dublin, Ohio) headed in a cross by Quinn.

Overall, Virginia outshot Virginia Tech 16-3 in the contest as each team had two corner kicks. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) did not need to make a save to record her sixth shutout of the season. Mallory Soldner made three saves in net for the Hokies.

“I was pleased with the effort and I thought we moved the ball extremely well,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We finished our chances early. It was nice to see those early ones go in since we hadn’t done that recently.”

With the victory, the Cavaliers earned one point in the Commonwealth Challenge. Virginia now leads the all-sports competition between the schools 1.5-0. The next event in the Commonwealth Challenge will occur on October 29, when the Cavalier men’s soccer team hosts Virginia Tech.

The Cavaliers will be off for a week before returning to action on October 20 when they visit No. 14 Boston College. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
