COLLEGE PARK, Md. – – Stephen King, Jason Garey and Robbie Rogers each scored one goal to lead No. 6 Maryland by No. 2 Virginia, 3-0, at Ludwig Field. The Cavaliers (10-2-2, 5-1-0 ACC) dropped their first game of the season in Atlantic Coast Conference play while Maryland (11-3-0, 5-1-0 ACC) moved into a first place tie with the Cavaliers.
The Terrapins built on a one goal lead in the 63rd minute. Stephen King took a through ball and squeezed a shot just by Virginia goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) in the 63rd minute. Jason Garey added Maryland’s final goal in the 86th minute when he headed in a free kick from Chris Lancos.
The Cavaliers had a chance to tie the game in the opening minutes of the second half when Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) missed high on a header.
Maryland struck first in the 43rd minute. Maurice Edu beat a UVa defender on the left side and sent a cross into the box. Robbie Rogers chipped in the pass just inside the right post putting the Terrapins ahead, 1-0.
The Cavaliers attempted three corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the game, but couldn’t push a goal across.
For the game, Maryland outshot Virginia 11-8. The Terrapins held an 8-5 advantage on corner kicks. Burke played all 90 minutes in goal and picked up one save. Chris Seitz earned the win for Maryland in goal. He finished with one save.
Virginia returns to action Saturday night when it hosts Liberty at 7 p.m. in its final nonconference game.
