CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Third baseman John Scaglione delivered the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Orange Team over the Blue Team in Game one of Virginia’s Orange-Blue Series at Davenport Field Wednesday evening. Right-handed pitcher Michael Schwimer picked up the win in relief for the Orange. Schwimer tossed two scoreless innings and struck out two batters.
Left-hander Mike Ballard started the game for the Orange Team and allowed one run on three hits while recording five strikeouts in five innings of work. Casey Lambert started the game for the Blue Team and earned a no decision. He held the Orange Team scoreless on two hits while striking out five before giving way to first-year Shooter Hunt. Hunt suffered the loss allowing two runs, one earned, in two innings. He also had two strikeouts.
The Blue Team took a 1-0 lead on an RBI hit by Mike Campagna.
Orange started its rally in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and the count 3-2, first-year center fielder Chance Gilmore doubled to the wall in left-center to score Tom Hagan and tie the game, 1-1. Scaglione followed. On a 2-1 count, he singled to center field to score Gilmore for the win.
Sean Doolittle, Gilmore, Scaglione and Nick Cruit each had one hit for the Orange team. Campagna led Blue going 2-for-2 at the plate. Mike Mitchell, Tim Henry and Ryan Hudson each had one hit for Blue.
Game two of the series will played Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. The final game of the series will be Friday night at 6 p.m. The games are free to the public.
