CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Play continued Saturday at the ITA Mideast Region Championships with one Cavalier singles player and one Cavalier doubles team reaching the semifinals. Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) reached the singles semifinals and the team of Rizza and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) reached the doubles semifinals.
In singles, Rizza won a pair of matches on Saturday to advance. In the round of 16, he topped Peter Rodrigues of Duke in straight sets. Later in the day, he defeated Cory Parr of Wake Forest in the quarterfinals in three sets. He will play Martin Sayer of Radford in the semifinals on Sunday. Sayer upset top-seeded Ludovic Walter of Duke in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Cohen won his first singles match of the day, topping NC State’s Andre Iriarte before falling to Jonathas Sucupira of Florida State in the quarterfinals.
In doubles, the team of Rizza and Cohen, seeded No. 6, topped No. 4 seeded Jarmaine Jenkins and Ryan Young of Clemson 8-6 in the quarterfinals Saturday. They will play Billy Mulligan and Colin O’Brien of William & Mary in the semifinals Sunday.
