TODAY’S GAME No. 5 Virginia plays its final regular season home game when the Cavaliers host No. 12 Virginia Tech Saturday night at Klockner Stadium on Senior Night. The game will be the second game of a doubleheader with the UVA women’s team and also will be the third game of the Commonwealth Challenge sponsored by Adelphia. UVa leads the Commonwealth Challenge 1.5-0 after picking up wins in volleyball and women’s soccer.
THE MATCH-UP: UVa picked up its 10th shutout of the season after defeating Liberty, 2-0, last Saturday. First-year forward Yannick Reyering scored his 11th goal of the season while Nico Colaluca added his first goal of the season for Virginia. Reyering now leads the team with 23 points. Third-year forward Adam Cristman has 18 points including seven goals and four assists. Jeremy Barlow leads the Cavaliers with nine assists after picking up a pair against Liberty. Third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke has posted a 0.77 goals against average and continues to lead the conference with 10 shutouts. As a team, the Cavaliers are averaging 1.79 goals per game and 15.0 shots. Virginia Tech is led by Patrick Nyarko and Magnus Einarsson who each have six goals. Nyarko
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE CAVALIERS: Yannick Reyering and Nico Colaluca each scored a goal and third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke pitched his 10th shutout of the season as No. 2 Virginia knocked off Liberty, 2-0. Burke finished the game with four saves. Reyering scored the game’s first goal at the 35:24 mark. Jeremy Barlow (Herndon, Va.) fired a shot that Mahan blocked out. Reyering gathered the loose ball and knocked it in for his eighth goal of the season putting UVa ahead, 1-0. Barlow was credited with the assist. The Cavaliers had several chances in the second half out-shooting the Flames, 17-3. Colaluca added UVa’s second goal in the 59th minute. Barlow sent a cross backside. Colaluca side-swiped a shot far post for his first goal of the season. Barlow earned his team-leading ninth assist.
ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH: The Hokies (9-3-4, 2-1-3 ACC) are in the midst of a nine-game unbeaten streak which includes an 8-0-1 record. The last time Virginia Tech lost a game was at No. 17 Wake Forest, 2-1, on Sept. 23. During the streak, the Hokies have defeated No. 4 North Carolina, 1-0, and No. 11 NC State, 4-0. Virginia Tech is fifth in the ACC standings with two conference games remaining. Seven different Hokies have double-digit points on the season led by Patrick Nyarko with 17 points (6 goals, 5 assists). The defense has a 0.89 GAA led by goalkeeper Chase Harrison, who has played 1511 minutes in goal allowing 15 goals and recording 42 saves.
THE SERIES VS. VIRGINIA TECH: Virginia and Virginia Tech have met 34 times on the soccer field. The Cavaliers are 31-3-0 all-time against the Hokies. Virginia Tech won last season’s meeting, 2-1, in Blacksburg. The last time the Hokies played in Charlottesville was during the 1999 season when Virginia won, 2-1. In last season’s meeting, the Hokies broke a 1-1 tie in the 54th minute to end the Cavaliers’ nine-game winning streak. The loss also snapped Virginia’s 27 consecutive game winning streak against Virginia Tech in men’s soccer. Virginia tied the game at 1-1 at 24:49 when Joe Vide scored his first goal of the season. Vide’s goal was set up by teammates Hunter Freeman and Will Hall who each had an assist on the play.
BURKE APPROACHING SINGLE-SEASON RECORD: Third-year goalkeeper Ryan Burke already has 10 shutouts on the season and needs just one more to tie the Virginia single-season record. With his shutout of Liberty, Burke moved into a tie for third place with Jeff Causey (1990). Tony Meola and Bob Willen share the single-season Virginia record with 11 solo shutouts.
