CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team wraps up the season series with Virginia Tech Tuesday (November 1) with a 7:00 p.m. match at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg. UVa won the first meeting of the series 3-0 (30-28, 30-23, 30-19) on October 4 and earned the first half of a point in the Commonwealth Challenge, presented by Adelphia. Another half of a point is on the line with Tuesday’s match. The winner of the match will also capture the traveling plaque for volleyball for the 2005 season.
Virginia stands at 14-8 overall and 9-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers are coming off a 3-0 (30-18, 30-25, 30-22) win over NC State Saturday (October 29). The Hokies are 11-11 overall and 6-7 in the conference. In its last outing, Virginia Tech fell to North Carolina 3-1 on October 29.
The Cavaliers lead the all-time series with Virginia Tech 25-20. UVa has won the last three matchups in the series and 10 of the past 11. Virginia won the initial meeting of the 2005 season 3-0 in Charlottesville. The Hokies’ last win in the series was a 3-0 triumph on September 10, 2002 in Blacksburg.
The contest with Virginia Tech begins a three-match road trip for the Cavaliers. After Tuesday’s match, UVa heads to College Park, Md., for a 7:00 p.m. match against ACC front-runner Maryland on Friday (November 4). Virginia wraps up the road trip with a 7:00 p.m. contest Saturday (November 5) at Boston College.
Virginia leads the Commonwealth Challenge over Virginia Tech 3.5-1.0. UVa gained two points in the series on Monday (October 31) when the Cavalier men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished ahead of Virginia Tech at the ACC Championships.
