CHARLOTTESVILLE – Juniors Melanie Kok, Sara Lippa and Kerry Maher are the captains of the 2005-06 University of Virginia women’s rowing team. They were chosen captains by their teammates.

Kok, from St. Catharines, Ontario, was a member of UVa’s varsity eight boat that finished fourth at the 2005 NCAA Championships and won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in that event. She earned a gold medal in September with Canada’s lightweight quad crew at the 2005 World Rowing Championships in Gifu, Japan.

Lippa, from Bala Cynwyd, Pa., was a gold medalist with Virginia’s second varsity eight crew at the 2005 NCAA Championships. She was also a member of the second varsity eight boat that finished first and was named ACC Crew of the Year at the 2005 ACC Championships.

Maher, from Welland, Ontario, was also a member of UVa’s varsity eight boat that finished fourth at the 2005 NCAA Championships and won the ACC Championship in that event. She was a gold medalist with Virginia’s NCAA Champion varsity four boat at the 2004 NCAA Championships.

All three captains were members of the fourth place championship eight boat at the Head of the Charles Regatta that opened Virginia’s 2005 fall season on October 23. They also competed with UVa’s second place crew in the open eight competition at the Princeton Chase on October 30. The Cavaliers complete their fall season by hosting the Rivanna Romp on Sunday (Nov. 13) at the Rivanna Reservoir.
