RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 33 Virginia women’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 47 N.C. State Saturday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh. The loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 8-7 on the season, 2-4 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack improve to 13-5, 2-4 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers started the match strong by winning the doubles point. The No. 15 ranked team of Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) downed Barbara Orlay and Alejandra Guerra 8-5 at No. 1 singles. Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) clinched the opening point for Virginia with their 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Shona Lee and Julia Roach.
In singles, the Cavaliers had a strong start, winning four of the six first sets. However, Virginia could only win one of those matches. At No. 3 singles, James defeated Guerra 6-2, 6-4, but the Wolfpack won the other five singles matches to win the dual match 5-2.
The Cavaliers continue their road trip on Sunday as they visit Wake Forest.
