COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team won seven out of the 12 races in which it competed at the ACC/Big Ten Regatta on Saturday (April 1). The Cavaliers’ second varsity “A” and first novice eight crews won both their morning events against Ohio State and their afternoon races against Michigan. OSU hosted the regatta at the Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio.
UVa, ranked third in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Poll, finished second to seventh-ranked Ohio State in the varsity eight event. Virginia finished in 6:38.40, slightly after Ohio State’s crew, which won the competition in a time of 6:36.80.
The Cavaliers also finished behind Ohio State in the second varsity eight event with a time of 6:44.25. Ohio State finished with a time of 6:38.60.
Virginia was defeated by Ohio State in the first varsity four event, finishing the race in 7:45.94. The Buckeyes finished with a time of 7:39.90.
UVa was victorious in the second varsity four race against Ohio State, finishing with a time of 7:44.70. Ohio State finished second (7:45.34), followed by Virginia’s “B” crew in third (7:59.33).
The Cavaliers were also successful in the first novice eight race, winning with a time of 7:04.10 to defeat Ohio State (7:30.60). Michigan won the second novice eight event with a time of 7:14.20, followed by Michigan State in second (7:19.42) and Virginia in third (7:41.12).
Virginia started the afternoon session finishing second to Michigan State in the second novice eight event. The Spartans finished with a time of 7:16.70, followed by the Cavaliers (7:18.77). Michigan came in third with a time of 7:19.39.
The Cavaliers went on to win their final five races of the day, with UVa’s first novice eight boat claiming Virginia’s first victory in afternoon competition. Virginia finished the race in 6:58.96, followed by Michigan in 6:59.75.
The Virginia “A” and “B” crews finished first and second with times of 7:53.30 and 8:00.07, respectively, to defeat Michigan in the second varsity four competition. Michigan finished third in a time of 8:09.06.
Virginia was also successful in the first varsity four race, finishing with a time of 7:46.50. Michigan finished the race in 7:53.00.
UVa won the second varsity eight competition as well. The Cavaliers finished in 6:43.87, followed by Michigan in 6:48.45.
The Cavaliers’ varsity eight crew finished the regatta defeating twelfth-ranked Michigan with a time of 6:36.13. Michigan finished in 6:36.46.
The next regatta for the UVa women’s rowing team is schedule for Saturday, April 8, when Virginia hosts Michigan State on the Rivanna Reservoir. The regatta is the only home competition for the team this spring.
