COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 8 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team recorded its tenth consecutive victory, downing Maryland 4-2 Wednesday afternoon at the Tennis Center of College Park. The Cavaliers remained the lone unbeaten team in ACC play, improving to 7-0 in the league, while improving to 17-5 overall.
The Cavaliers opened the contest by winning the doubles point for the 11th consecutive match. The team of Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) scored an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Andreas Vaage-Nilsen and Nickolai Nielsen. The team of Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) clinched the opening point with their 8-3 win over Josh Brauser and Boris Febroyt at No. 1 doubles. Stephen Rozek (Chardon, Ohio) and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) completed the doubles sweep with their 8-2 win over Scott Fink and Aaron Carr at the No. 3 position.
In singles, the Terps (9-7, 1-6) drew even when Stewart had to retire at No. 1 singles to Nielsen.
“Doug suffered a slight back strain in the match,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “As a precaution, we decided to pull him. He will be ready to go Friday.”
The Cavaliers retook the lead at 2-1 as Miklo defeated Fetbroyt 6-1, 7-6 at No. 3 singles. Cohen extended the lead to 3-1 as he topped Fink in three sets at No. 4 singles. Huey then clinched the dual match for Virginia with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Vaage-Nilsen at No. 2 singles. The Terrapins won at No. 6 singles in a superbreaker and the No. 5 singles match was abandoned.
The win extends the Cavaliers’ conference winning streak to 18 consecutive ACC regular season matches and 24 ACC matches overall. The win was also Virginia’s 11th consecutive ACC road win.
The Cavaliers return home on Friday as they host No. 14 Miami. Match time at the Snyder Tennis Center is 3:00 p.m. Admission is free.
